Shelby Grant
Executive Advisor & Founder
Shelby started Education Matters Tutoring because he believes that proper education is a right, not a privilege. When he spotted educational disparities in his community, he immediately sought to create change to develop a more academically prepared generation of Mississippi students!
In the fall, he’ll be attending the University of Virginia as a Jefferson & Echols Scholar and plans to major in Global Public Health.
Crystal Gao
Marketing Director Advisor
Crystal served on the Education Matters Tutoring Board for two years. She believes that education unlocks one’s true potential, and she hopes to continue assisting the upcoming generation of scientists, writers, and all in between!
In the fall, she’ll be attending Brown University and plans to concentrate in Neuroscience, with intentions of enrolling in medical school through an MSTP program to become a neuropsychiatrist.

Hazel Ginn
Executive Director
Hazel believes every child deserves the chance to learn, grow, and have someone in their corner who believes in them. She’s loved building relationships with the students and watching them become more confident in themselves. Education is important, but so is making sure every child knows they are supported and capable of success. As Executive Director, she’s excited to continue supporting Education Matters Tutoring's mission and making a positive impact.
Hazel plans to attend the University of Mississippi and major in Biological Sciences while following the pre-med track. Her goal is to attend medical school and become an OB-GYN.
Marketing Director
Elise is very excited to continue being a helping hand to kids and parents alike. She’s noticed how much of a difference tutors were making in these kids’ lives and education, and she is so happy to become more involved in this program and give kids the boost they need to accomplish great things.
Elise plans to attend the University of Mississippi next year. She hopes to become involved in programs for underprivileged children in Oxford as well.

Claire wishes to play a larger role in tutoring underprivileged youth in Jackson. This year, she aims to make tutoring a more permanent part of her schedule, as she believes working with the children is a privilege. She hopes to make a real impact on children’s education while still making learning enjoyable and fulfilling.
Claire plans to major in Biomedical Engineering, with the goal of entering the medical field. She strives to implement the skills she learns from tutoring to help her become a pediatric surgeon.

To Taylor, serving on the board of Education Matters Tutoring this year truly means the world. She started tutoring last year, and she’s realized it is the greatest blessing to help kids around Jackson learn and excel in school. Seeing how her help has made a positive difference in someone else’s learning motivates her to continue tutoring and becoming a leader in the community.
Taylor plans to attend the University of Mississippi and major in Biological Science, with the intention of becoming a nurse practitioner.

Sarah Kathryn believes that tutoring has given her a unique opportunity to use the education she has received to help others learn. She hopes to make a positive impact on the younger generation through Education Matters. Serving others has changed the way she looks at life, and she’s excited to continue motivating younger students.
Sarah Kathryn plans to attend Mississippi State with intentions of enrolling in dental school.
